Color up your life!

With casual charm, Felix Scheinberger illustrates how to spruce up sketches with a hint of color. He provides hands-on tips on glazing and washing over, and he reveals where the watercolors grow. With color stories worth reading, he awakens the pleasure of watercolor.

Because watercolor always does what it wants a little bit, this book is no painting manual. Instead, it is a humorous attempt to tame the shrew in search of the right mix of »guiding « and »letting go «. Because pictures are often only really good when they surprise us with a hint of anarchy. This is where their power, and the decisive difference to photographs lie.

What is inside?

Tried and tested tips on how to breathe life into sketches through color.

Exciting insight and stimulating color stories as well as a theory of color. Both ignite the desire to collect paints.

A cheerful introduction to glazing and washing over.

Tips and tricks, impulses and advice on practical tools, on improvisation, and cost-effective alternatives.

To fancy splish-splash over toiling away.

Every cover a unique specimen- for real?

When it came to designing the cover of this book, we took many extra leaps. Dismissed many drafts. Met time and again. Some time during the shared spaghetti meal typical of our meetings came the idea to simply paint on the books with watercolor. No one had sincerely suggested it. All of a sudden, it was there. A daft idea over a glass of wine.

Such ideas come frequently, and, most times, then comes an inner voice saying »now you’ve gone mad «. In our case, Felix and Bertram drew the calculator: Felix to calculate how much the amount of paint needed would be. Bertram because he wanted to know how much space 3000 books would require to dry.

To live dreams, you need good partners. Schmincke provided us with the paint. With a grin, admiration and a bit of amazement. Reiner Vetterman has let us turn the fantastic Buchbinderei Schaumann into an atelier multiple times since the first edition.

The next time you think »this is crazy «, think of Felix and us: Sometimes, what may seem mad simply is a terrific pleasure- for the reader.
